in today’s video I’m going to show you
how to use your metronome to practice not having to rely on a metronome bass
hack coming up hey Basshackers Mischa here with MMEducation showing you how
to learn faster in practice smarter by using the latest findings in
neuroscience so you can become the bass player you want to be express yourself
freely on your instrument and connect with your audience on a deeper level so

and build some new neural pathways let’s start off this episode by breaking a
popular false belief pattern the believe I’m talking about is that it’s the
responsibility of the drummer to keep the time as comfortable as it might
sound to just play along with the drummer and everything’s good it makes a
lot of sense to be independent from the drummer and his time feel especially
if you’re playing a gig with a drummer that you don’t know that well he might
either have bad timing or just a different feel of time than you have
you might be completely lost if you’ve never dug a little bit deeper into this
whole topic of INNER CLOCK one of the biggest challenges as a bassist is developing a
good sense of time generally we’re taught to practice with a metronome to
strengthen your time feel play with a good drummer play with a good band to
strengthen your time feel but the truth is both of these tips are kind of
doing the opposite because practicing with a metronome or with a good drummer
gets us used to relying on an outside source that keeps
track of the time for us instead of strengthening our own inner clock so to
get out of this mess we have to create challenges in our practicing routine
that increase our responsibility of keeping track of the time before we get
into the exercise I want to quickly talk about inner time versus total control
these are two different metronome concepts and we’re gonna use both of
them to get the most out of our exercises inner control basically means
that you set the metronome only on a few spots like on quarter notes and then
total control would be for example if you play a sixteenth groove to have a
subdivision click on sixteenth notes or play with the drummer that plays the
sixteenth notes and the hi-hat this way you get feedback on how well you execute
every single note that you play it’s the second note right on the subdivision is
the fourth one on it there’s a lot more control over how much you play for
example a little bit in front of the beat or behind the beat
exercise one the “conquer and divide” method put your metronome on the
smallest subdivision you play in your groove and start playing a root for me
I’m just gonna put it on 160 and eighth notes okay that feels alright I’ve got a good
feel of that tempo now I’m going to divide my subdivisions by two so I only
want half of the subdivisions now that this feels comfortable I’m gonna divide
by two one more time so now we’re going down to
tempo 80 these are basically half notes now all right I’m gonna turn it down
another notch tempo 40 now this should be whole notes now all right for exercise number two we
basically follow the same concept of putting more space in between the beats
but now we’re doing it in a DAW . (digital audio workstation) and give ourselves a little bit more freedom to
change around things what you’re gonna have to do you’re just going to open a
project program a four bar drum loop Or just use a preset loop template
whatever and then you loop the cycle of four bars and you mute the last bar of
the drum loop so you go so what you get is three bars of drum loop and one bar
silence now the challenge is to keep playing your groove without getting
faster or slower when you manage to play that last bar perfectly in time then
mute the third bar of drum loop as well so you get two bars of drum loop and two
bars of rest again your challenge is to keep the time on your own without a
drummer supporting you next step only one bar after only three bouts of rest
and then the final last step just one hit on the one and then basically four
bars of rest exercise number three the victor wooten fans out there probably
already know this one “rhythmic displacement of the click” so if we get
back to our original groove from exercise one now let’s just play for a
bit but now instead of having the clicks on
the downbeats on one two three four let’s just put them on the off beats one
two one two three four this is just one way of doing it
you could also combine the conquer and divide with the rhythmic displacement I
can go down a notch to the half notes I could play make it really easy start out
with them on the back beat one two three one two three four or I could go a little bit wacky
yeah and move them by a sixteenth you can now turn down the tempo even
more and just have the last sixteenth of each bar today I showed you two
different ways to look at a metronome only one hand it can be used to get
feedback on how precisely you execute every singer subdivision of a group on
the other hand you can strengthen your inner time feel by only getting feedback
in very specific anchor points of time now it’s up to you to not just take in
the information but instead create new neural pathways in your brain by
applying the newly gained knowledge question of the day which other
